SFIG Staff Met with Senior Senate Staff on GSE Reform

SFIG staff was on Capitol Hill this week meeting with senior Senate staffers to discuss Senate GSE Reform efforts. SFIG supports these efforts to craft bipartisan legislation that seeks to address the current outsized influence of the government through the GSEs, and would level the playing field with private capital through market-based pricing and competition.

A principal topic of discussion was a draft of a housing finance reform bill currently circulating among Senate staff. SFIG has prepared a document summarizing a recently circulated version of the bill, looking at relevant portions of the bill and comparing them with proposals submitted by the Milken Institute and the Mortgage Bankers Association, both of which inform aspects of the Senate draft bill.

SFIG's summary covers various sections of the bill, including capitalization plans, the government guarantee, affordable housing, and general administrative practices. SFIG continues to engage in conversations with Congressional staff to advocate for a deep and liquid secondary market, and for a level playing field between public funding and private capital, and we will keep membership up to date on the latest developments around housing finance reform.
