HMDA Data Shows Strong Secondary Market Activity in 2017

According to recently released Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data, analyzed in Inside Mortgage Finance, more than 70 percent of home loans originated in 2017 were sold to secondary market investors. In total, lenders reported $1.738 trillion in first-lien single-family mortgage origination in 2017, using HMDA data that covers 96 percent of the market. While Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Ginnie Mae accepted $718 billion, originators also sold $483 billion of loans to non-agency buyers, including $306 billion of conventional loans.
