2017 MPL ABS Market Outlook

According to a Crowdfund Insider article, the market for Marketplace Lending (MPL) ABS was robust in 2016, with total issuance up 59% year over year, and the percentage of loans funded through securitization at a record high of 70%.

The positive trends in the market set the stage for 2017, which is expected to be characterized by "increasing bank partnership, further industry consolidation, and regulatory and legal reform."

The article also predicts that rulings could come in 2017 for some of the primary legal cases from the past year, and a ruling is expected in the Madden v. Midland case in early 2017. In addition, regulatory reform is seen as highly likely as the new administration takes office, which has signaled a willingness to embrace the "financial services establishment."

The article points out that the broad theme of reduced government oversight and rollback of regulation makes it increasingly likely that "self-regulatory initiatives such as Structured Finance Industry Group's disclosure project and the SMART box proposal" will gain new significance.
